Yong’an Map Poster & Print
Yong’an is the seat of Fengjie County in north-eastern Chongqing, on the north bank of the Yangtze. The landscape is steep, and from above the town looks like a set of terraces: streets run along the contours of the slope, tall buildings stack up the hillside, and switchback roads link the levels. Beyond them, mountains rise sharply on both banks.
The town lies just upstream of Qutang Gorge, the first and shortest of the Three Gorges, and near Baidicheng, the White Emperor City, which is linked to the Three Kingdoms period and to the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu. When the Three Gorges Dam raised the level of the river, much of the old town was rebuilt higher up the slope.
A Yong’an map poster is mainly about relief and water. The broad, still reservoir of the Yangtze runs across the frame, and the town’s narrow bands of streets cling above it. Few maps show so clearly how a city adapts to a mountain. The compressed layout gives the poster a strong horizontal rhythm.
