Zeewolde Map Poster & Print
Zeewolde stands on land that was seabed until the mid-twentieth century. It is part of Southern Flevoland, one of the polders reclaimed from the former Zuiderzee, and it became a municipality in 1984, which makes it the youngest in the Netherlands. On a map, that origin is obvious. Straight dykes, canals and field boundaries run at right angles across flat land.
The town itself sits on the edge of the Wolderwijd, one of the border lakes separating the polder from the older mainland. That shoreline, with its marinas and water edge, is the one strong curve in an otherwise geometric landscape. Inland, the Horsterwold forest was planted on the new land and appears as a large block of green among the fields.
