Zhigou is a town in southeastern Shandong, in the hilly country that lies inland from the Yellow Sea coast. The land here rises and falls in low hills and shallow valleys. On a map, the town gathers where the roads meet, and the pattern of streets thins out quickly into terraced and valley farmland.
Like many towns in rural Shandong, Zhigou has a main street with commercial buildings, blocks of newer housing around it, and small village clusters scattered across the countryside. The roads bend with the ground rather than keeping to a grid, and streams run down the valleys. It is a landscape of work, farms and small settlements rather than landmarks.
