Zhoucheng lies in western Shandong, on part of the North China Plain, where the land is almost completely flat and farming shapes nearly everything outside the built-up areas. From above, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets, with roads leading out across the fields to villages spread across the countryside.
The flat terrain gives the map a particular clarity. There are no ridges to bend the roads, so routes run long and straight, and field boundaries line up in orderly strips. Villages appear as small, dense knots of lanes at regular intervals, each surrounded by cultivated land. The pattern is typical of the region, yet each settlement has its own outline and orientation.
Western Shandong is also a region of lakes, canals and old waterways, and water channels and irrigation lines run through the farmland around the town.
