Zhoujia lies in the rolling hill country of north-eastern Chongqing, far from the Yangtze megacity that shares the municipality's name. Almost no ground here is flat. Roads follow the contours, and the built area settles into whatever level land the valleys offer.
Seen from above, the town is a loose knot of streets rather than a grid. Newer blocks sit along the main roads, and older lanes crowd closer together near the centre. Outside town, farm tracks wind between terraced fields and small reservoirs. That network of curving lines gives the map a hand-drawn quality even though every line follows the real terrain.
