Anantapur sits on the Deccan plateau in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, a district headquarters surrounded by red soil, rocky outcrops and farmland. From above, the town reads as a dense core of short, irregular lanes that thins quickly into newer layouts, with open land visible on every side. No large river organises the plan, so the roads do that work instead.
The main highway linking Bengaluru and Hyderabad runs past the town, and much of the newer growth has followed it and the roads that branch toward neighbouring towns.
