The through road
The town's main axis is the road running through its centre. Most streets and buildings line up along it, so the town reads on paper as a long, narrow strip rather than a compact block.

Gorongosa Map Poster & Print
Gorongosa is a district town in Sofala province, in central Mozambique. From above, it looks like many Mozambican road towns. One main route runs north to south through it, and short side streets and lanes branch off on either side. Buildings sit close to the road, then thin out into scattered homesteads, cleared plots and patches of woodland. The pattern is loose and linear, with no dense grid.
The town shares its name with two much larger landscapes. To the west, the Gorongosa massif rises from the plain as an isolated highland whose streams drain down towards the lowlands. To the east lies Gorongosa National Park, a stretch of the Great Rift Valley floor. It is known internationally for a long restoration effort after wildlife numbers fell sharply during the country's civil war.
A Gorongosa map poster reduces all of this to line and space. The town's streets gather in a narrow band along the road, and the minor tracks fade out into the countryside around it. The result is an open composition with plenty of white space. It shows a settlement shaped more by the road it grew along than by any formal plan, set on the edge of a wide and much-studied landscape.

Toward the massif
West of town the ground rises towards Mount Gorongosa, a solitary highland. On a street-level map this shows as a thinning of lanes and a scatter of tracks leading off towards higher ground.
Edge of the park
The town sits near the national park that shares its name. Beyond the last streets, the network gives way to open country with few roads, and the paper is left almost bare.
