Khānaqīn lies in Diyala province close to the Iranian border, where the Mesopotamian plain begins to rise toward the Zagros Mountains. The Alwand River runs through the town, and on a map it is the main line around which everything is arranged. Streets and neighbourhoods spread out on both banks, with the older centre closest to the water.
For centuries the town was a stop on the road between Baghdad and Iran, used by traders and by pilgrims travelling to the shrine cities of Iraq. An old multi-arched stone bridge crosses the Alwand and is one of the town's best-known landmarks. Khānaqīn was also one of the early places in Iraq where oil was produced and refined.
A Khānaqīn map poster shows the river curving through the centre, with bridges tying the two halves together. The street pattern is loosely gridded with irregular older quarters, and the main roads lead toward the border crossing and the rest of Diyala. Beyond the town, farmland and dry hills fill the edges of the frame with open space.
The river runs straight through the town, dividing it into two parts and giving the whole map a clear, central line of water.
A historic arched bridge crosses the Alwand, one of several crossings that link the banks and mark the old route toward Iran.
The town sits where the plain meets the first ridges of the Zagros, so open farmland and rising terrain surround the compact streets.
