Saña lies in the valley of the river of the same name, in the coastal lowlands of Lambayeque in northern Peru. Around it the desert has been turned into farmland by irrigation, and from above the town sits among green fields cut by canals, with the dry ground beginning where the water ends. The river corridor runs nearby, a pale band that shifts with each flood season.
The town was founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century and became one of the wealthier settlements on the northern coast. Its fortunes turned after a pirate raid in the late seventeenth century and a severe flood in 1720, after which much of the population moved away. The roofless walls of colonial churches and convents still stand on the edge of the present town.
A Saña map poster brings together these layers. The modern street grid is small and regular, the irrigated valley surrounds it with long field lines, and the river runs along one side. It is a quiet map of a place whose story is larger than its size, and whose ruins are still part of the town plan.
The remains of churches and a convent from the colonial city stand at the edge of town, open to the sky since the flood of 1720 and still marked by their rectangular footprints.
Canals carry river water across the valley floor, so the town is surrounded by a patchwork of fields that ends abruptly where the desert begins.
The river runs past the town in a wide, shallow bed that carries little water most of the year but can flood hard, which shaped the town's history.

Sooq Saña
Saña matters to people from Lambayeque and to anyone interested in the colonial history of the Peruvian coast. As a poster it is understated: a small grid, a river and fields, with the knowledge that there is much more behind the lines.
Add a personal title, a subtitle or date, and the coordinates, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 download includes six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF files, with no watermark.
