Skopje lies in a broad basin where the Vardar River flows from west to east, and almost everything on the map is oriented to it. Embankments and parks line both banks, a string of bridges crosses the water through the centre, and the city extends in a long band along the valley floor between mountains on either side.
The two banks look quite different from above. On the north side the Old Bazaar forms a dense knot of lanes below the walls of Kale Fortress, one of the largest Ottoman-era markets in the Balkans. South of the river the blocks open up, much of the area rebuilt after the earthquake of 1963, when a plan by Kenzo Tange helped shape the new centre.
Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia and the birthplace of Mother Teresa, who was born here in 1910. Mount Vodno, topped by the large Millennium Cross, closes the view to the south. A Skopje map poster sets the river, the bazaar lanes and the forested slopes of Vodno into one clear composition.
The fifteenth-century Ottoman bridge links the main square to the Old Bazaar and remains the central crossing on the Vardar, the thread that ties both halves of the city together.
A tight maze of short, irregular streets on the north bank, lined with mosques, inns and workshops, contrasting sharply with the straighter blocks across the river.
The mountain rises directly behind the southern suburbs, and its forested slopes and switchback road fill the southern edge of a wider map with winding lines and open ground.

Sooq Skopje
Skopje suits a wall because it is legible: a single river, a clear centre and mountains that frame the edges. It is a natural choice for people who grew up there, studied there or have family ties to Macedonia, and for anyone drawn to Balkan capitals.
Add your own title and subtitle, or replace the coordinates line with a date, and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. The $9 digital files come in six print sizes without a watermark, and printed posters are available on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
