Nunap assinga
Smolensk sits on the upper Dnieper, which runs through the city from east to west. The historic centre lies on the hilly southern bank, where the land is cut by ravines that shape the streets into irregular curves. On the map, the northern bank is flatter, with the railway station and more regular districts, and several bridges cross the river between the two sides.
The Smolensk fortress wall, built at the turn of the seventeenth century, once enclosed the old centre. Long sections and towers still stand, and on the map its outline can still be traced around the historic core. Above the river rises the Assumption Cathedral, whose hill is one of the highest points in the centre and a landmark visible from far away.
A Smolensk map poster records one of the oldest cities in Russia, first mentioned in chronicles in the ninth century. It stood on the route between Moscow and the west, and saw battles in 1812 and during the Second World War. The map reveals the terrain that made it strategic: a river crossing guarded by hills.
The surviving towers and walls of the early seventeenth-century fortress trace a ring around the historic centre on the southern bank of the Dnieper.
The river divides the hilly old city from the flatter northern districts, connected by bridges that form the main links across the map.
Deep ravines cut through the southern bank, bending the streets into curves and creating green strips that break up the urban fabric.

For people from Smolensk and those with family ties to the city, the fortress, the river and the hills are a strong shared image. A map puts all three together in a clear, understated form.
