Alexandra Land is the westernmost large island of Franz Josef Land, in the Russian high Arctic. Most of it is covered by an ice cap. Its outline is broad and lobed, and the coast is often formed by ice cliffs or bare ground. Roads are almost absent, so the map shows a white landmass on a white sea divided only by the shoreline.
The island is home to Nagurskoye, one of the northernmost airfields and military bases in the world. During the Second World War a German weather station operated here secretly. Its remains were found long after the war. Today the island is part of a protected Arctic area, but it is still reached mainly by military and scientific missions.
