Bäherden lies in Ahal province in southern Turkmenistan, at the foot of the Kopet Dag range that marks the border with Iran. On a map the town sits between two very different landscapes: the rising folds of the mountains to the south and the open plain stretching north toward the Karakum desert. Its streets follow a largely regular pattern across the flat ground.
The area is known for the Kow Ata underground lake, a warm mineral lake inside a cave in the nearby hills, which draws visitors from across the country. In the town itself, irrigation channels and roads shape the land, and the main road along the foothills links Bäherden with Ashgabat and other settlements of the region.
