Changling is a town in northeastern Chongqing, in the rugged landscape that lines the Yangtze on its way toward the Three Gorges. The area is made of ridges, gullies and terraced slopes, and the town has grown to fit that ground. Built-up streets gather where the land allows, and the roads between them follow the easiest line across the hills.
The result on a map is a loose, uneven network. It has a denser knot of streets at the centre, looser strands leading away, and wide stretches where only a single winding road crosses the terrain. Nothing lines up with the compass. That irregularity is what makes the area interesting to look at from above.
