Engelskirchen lies in the Oberbergischer Kreis, east of Cologne, in the valley of the Agger. The map is shaped by that valley. The town stretches along the river in a long, narrow band, with the main road and railway following the same corridor. Side streets climb only a little way up the slopes before giving way to woodland.
The river once powered the town's industry. The Ermen & Engels cotton mill, linked to the family of Friedrich Engels, operated here, and the site is now part of the LVR Industrial Museum.
