Valley floor centre
The oldest and densest part of town sits on lower ground. Short blocks and closely spaced streets form the darkest patch of the print, and the rest of the settlement spreads outward from it.

Escada Map Poster & Print
Escada lies in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the humid belt of hills south-west of Recife that has been planted with sugarcane since colonial times. From above, the town looks like a small cluster of streets pressed into a valley floor. Rolling ground surrounds it on every side, and roads have to follow the slopes and the river bottoms because they cannot run straight across them.
The name is Portuguese for staircase, which suits a place defined by changes in level. On the map, the dense centre gives way to looser neighbourhoods that climb the nearby rises. Streets curve and branch where the terrain allows, so the town takes on an irregular outline rather than a regular grid. The river running past the town adds one long, meandering line to the composition.
An Escada map poster shows a town shaped by its landscape instead of by a planner's ruler. In black and white, the pattern is easy to follow: tightly knit blocks near the core, then lanes thinning out towards open fields. Past the edges, a few lines lead off into the countryside, tracing the old routes between the town, the surrounding estates and the neighbouring municipalities of the region.

Streets on the slopes
Around the core, roads bend to follow the contours of the surrounding hills. On paper they show up as curves and forks, a good record of how the ground rises and falls.
River and open land
A winding river line and the large empty spaces of cane fields frame the built area, giving the composition a lot of negative space and making its small scale clear.

For people who grew up in Escada or have family in the Zona da Mata, this map holds something personal: the streets walked to school, the road out towards the fields, the shape of home seen whole. It suits a hallway, a study or a gift sent to someone living far from Pernambuco.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or a meaningful date, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the HD digital files for $9, or order a printed poster on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
