Firozpur lies in the far west of Indian Punjab, close to the Sutlej River and the international border. Its map has two distinct halves. The old walled city is a dense tangle of lanes entered through historic gates. The cantonment, laid out by the British, has wide roads, large plots and generous open ground. From above, the contrast is striking.
The city is traditionally said to have been founded by Firuz Shah Tughlaq in the fourteenth century, and it later became an important military station. Battles of the First Anglo-Sikh War were fought nearby. At Hussainiwala, on the border to the west, a memorial marks the place where Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were cremated in 1931.
