Heimaey is the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar, the Westman Islands, off the south coast of Iceland. Its outline is irregular and full of contrasts: steep cliffs in the north, the town and harbour in the middle, and two volcanic cones, Eldfell and Helgafell, rising to the east. From above, the town's orderly streets press right up against fields of young lava.
In January 1973 a fissure opened on the edge of town and formed Eldfell. The eruption buried hundreds of houses and forced a rapid evacuation, and lava flowed toward the harbour entrance. Crews pumped seawater onto the advancing front to slow it, and the harbour survived. The new lava added land to the island and left the harbour better sheltered than before.

The harbour lies in a narrow inlet on the north side of town, protected by cliffs on one side and the newer lava on the other.
Herjólfsdalur
A grassy valley on the western side of the island, enclosed by steep slopes, is where the annual festival takes place. It forms a distinct open bowl on the map.
