Ixtapa in Jalisco sits on the flat, fertile ground inland from Banderas Bay, within the municipality of Puerto Vallarta. It should not be confused with the better-known resort of the same name on the Guerrero coast. From above, the town shows as a compact block of streets. Cultivated land presses in on every side, and the Sierra Madre foothills rise to the east.
The street pattern is simple and mostly regular, a grid of short blocks that loosens toward the edges, where houses give way to plots and farm tracks.
