Jamālpur lies in Munger district in eastern Bihar, a short distance south of the Ganges. On a map the town is shaped by the railway more than by any river. Tracks, sidings and long workshop sheds take up a large share of the frame, and the residential streets gather around them. The Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop, opened in 1862, is one of the oldest railway workshops in India, and the town grew around it.
