Hilltop street knots
Each of the historic hills carries its own loop of roads around a summit, often topped by a cathedral, mosque or palace. This gives the map a pattern of clustered circles.

Kampala Map Poster & Print
Kampala is traditionally described as a city of seven hills, and on a map you can see why. Main roads follow the ridges and valleys, curving around the slopes of Mengo, Kasubi, Namirembe, Rubaga, Kibuli, Nakasero and Old Kampala rather than crossing them. Unlike a grid city, its streets bend and branch, and each hill forms its own small knot of roads.
The central business district sits on and around Nakasero, with broader, straighter streets than the neighbourhoods around it. To the south and east the city runs down toward Lake Victoria and reaches the water at Port Bell and Murchison Bay. Wetlands in the low valleys between the hills show up as open, unbuilt ground running through the urban pattern.
The name is linked to the impala that once grazed these hills. The Kasubi Tombs, burial ground of the kings of Buganda, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the west of the city. A Kampala map poster shows the capital of Uganda as a winding street pattern that climbs over the hills, very different from the planned grids of many capitals.

Lake Victoria shore
The southern edge of the city meets the lake at Murchison Bay and Port Bell. The curving waterline leaves an open space at the base of the composition.
Valley wetlands
Low ground between the hills holds wetlands and green corridors. The map alternates between dense ridges and lighter bands where fewer streets have been built.

Kampala is often where people from across Uganda studied, started work or met their partner. Title the poster with a hill or neighbourhood, add a date or names in the subtitle, and keep the coordinates for the exact place.
The curving roads look especially good in Blueprint or Noir, where light lines stand out on a dark ground. Files cost $9 for six sizes with no watermark, and a free 900 px preview is available before you buy.
