Ridge-top old town
The historic core follows the crest of the hill, so its lanes bunch into a narrow, irregular band that looks quite different from the gridless sprawl of the valley below.

Ki̇̄rtipur Map Poster & Print
Kirtipur sits on a low ridge on the southwestern side of the Kathmandu Valley, a few kilometres from the centre of the capital. From above, the old town reads as a dense cluster of short, winding lanes along the top of the hill. Around it the valley floor spreads out in a looser pattern of newer streets, fields and roads running towards Kathmandu.
The town is one of the traditional Newar settlements of the valley. It is best known for its long resistance to the forces of Prithvi Narayan Shah in the eighteenth century, before the unification of Nepal. Temples and brick courtyards still sit along the ridge, and on a map the old core stands apart from the open ground below it.
A Ki̇̄rtipur map poster captures that contrast between hill and plain. Tribhuvan University, Nepal's oldest university, has its main campus at the foot of the hill, and its wide grounds show as a calmer space next to the tight grain of the old town. The result is a small map with a very clear sense of height and edge.

University grounds
The Tribhuvan University campus lies at the base of the ridge, where its open grounds and scattered buildings form a looser, greener patch on the map.
Valley edge
Roads drop from the hill towards Kathmandu, so you can trace how a once-separate hill town now meets the growing city across the valley floor.
