Seen from above, Natore does not follow a grid. Its streets bend and branch the way older Bengali towns grew, following paths between neighbourhoods, markets and water. Small ponds and tanks show up as quiet blank shapes between the lines, and the built-up core thins out quickly into fields. The town is best known as the seat of the Natore Raj, the zamindar family linked with Rani Bhabani, the eighteenth-century landholder remembered for her administration and charity. The Natore Rajbari, the old palace complex, still sits within its own grounds of lawns and ponds.
