Poço Redondo Map Poster & Print
Poço Redondo lies in the semi-arid sertão of Sergipe, in the north-west of the state near the São Francisco River. From above, the town is compact, a small grid of streets around its centre surrounded by dry, open country. Roads lead out across the plain toward the river and neighbouring towns, and the built-up area ends abruptly where the scrubland begins.
The municipality reaches down to the São Francisco, which here runs through a deep, rocky valley on its way to the sea and forms the border with Alagoas. On a wider map, the river's sweeping course and the tracks running down toward it give the region a strong, directional shape that the town itself lacks.
The municipality also contains the Grota do Angico, the ravine where the cangaceiro Lampião and members of his band were killed in 1938. People interested in the history of the Northeast still visit the site. A Poço Redondo map poster keeps the town at its centre, framed by the dry land and the river valley.
