Soignies lies in the province of Hainaut in Wallonia, between Mons and Brussels, in gently rolling farmland. The town grew around a monastery founded by Saint Vincent Madelgaire in the seventh century. Its historic centre still gathers around the great collegiate church that bears his name, and from above, streets converge on that core from every direction.
Just outside the centre, the map reveals something less expected. Large, deep and geometric quarries are cut into the ground to extract the blue-grey limestone known in Belgium as pierre bleue.
