Wethersfield lies just south of Hartford, on the west bank of the Connecticut River. Settled in the 1630s, it is one of the oldest towns in Connecticut. On a map, the historic district of Old Wethersfield forms a compact area along its main street, close to Wethersfield Cove, a sheltered inlet off the river.
The town's history is closely tied to the Revolutionary War. In 1781 George Washington met the Comte de Rochambeau at the Webb House to plan the campaign that ended at Yorktown. Today the house is part of the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum. Beyond the old district, suburban streets spread west in curving residential patterns.
