Zaria Map Poster & Print
From above, Zaria looks less like one city than several. The old walled town sits to the south, a dense mass of lanes and compounds inside the remains of its earthen walls. Across open ground to the north lie the straighter streets built around the railway in the colonial era. The spaces in between are still easy to see on the map.
Zaria was the seat of the Hausa kingdom of Zazzau, and its history is tied to Queen Amina, the ruler remembered in local tradition for building defensive walls. The emir's palace still stands in the old city. Around it the streets bend and fork the way footpaths do, and they never settle into a pattern. In plan the old town reads as a fine, irregular texture.
To the north-west sits Ahmadu Bello University, one of the largest universities in Africa. Its main campus at Samaru spreads across open land in wide loops of road, with room between the buildings. A Zaria map poster shows all three layers side by side: the walled town, the railway districts and the campus, each with its own grain.

Railway-era districts
North of the old city, the neighbourhoods laid out alongside the railway have straighter blocks and more regular crossings. On the map they read as a separate town.
Samaru campus
Ahmadu Bello University's main campus is drawn in broad curving roads, with open ground between its faculties. It forms a looser pattern at the city's north-western edge.
