Acacías is in Colombia's Meta Department, a short distance south of Villavicencio, where the steep slopes of the Eastern Cordillera give way to the flat Llanos. On a map, you can see that transition almost directly. To the west the terrain rises in folds, and to the east the land spreads into an open plain of fields and pastures.
The town itself has a fairly regular grid of blocks around a central plaza, the pattern found in many Colombian towns. Rivers and streams coming down from the mountains cross the area and frame the built zone, and roads lead out toward Villavicencio and further south along the foothills. Acacías is an agricultural and service centre for the surrounding region, and cattle ranching, farming and the oil industry of the Llanos all play a role in its economy.
