Aizu-misato is a town in western Fukushima Prefecture, in the southern part of the Aizu basin. From above, it is mostly agricultural land. Wide areas of rice paddies are divided into a precise grid of small fields, and villages and farmsteads are spread among them instead of forming a single dense centre. Forested mountains rise at the edges of the basin.
The town also includes Hongō, known for Aizu-Hongō ware, a pottery tradition that has continued here for centuries. On the map, the settled areas follow the roads and rail line across the plain, with small clusters of streets where the older villages sit. Rivers and irrigation channels run through the fields in long, gentle lines.
