Amposta is the capital of the Montsià comarca in southern Catalonia, on the lower Ebro just before the river enters its delta. It is known for its early twentieth-century suspension bridge over the Ebro. Rice paddies spread out around the town into the Ebro Delta, a large wetland area that is also a nature park.
On a map, the Ebro dominates, a broad river crossing the frame, with the town on its bank. The older streets sit close to the water, and newer districts spread further inland. Beyond the town the land flattens into the delta, where rice fields are divided by canals and tracks into a precise grid of parcels. That makes the surroundings as graphically strong as the town.
