Bad Rappenau lies in the Kraichgau, the gently rolling hill country of northern Baden-Württemberg, a short distance north-west of Heilbronn. Its story changed in the nineteenth century when salt deposits were found beneath the town. They led to a saltworks and later to the brine baths that gave it the 'Bad' in its name. Today it is known above all as a spa town.
On a map, the main town forms a compact core with a moated castle and spa park near its centre, while the rest of the municipality spreads out as separate villages linked by country roads. Fields fill the gaps between them, so the drawing shows several distinct clusters rather than one continuous urban area. The A6 motorway crosses the area.
