Baden lies about 25 kilometres south of Vienna, at the point where the eastern edge of the Vienna Woods meets the flat Vienna Basin. The Schwechat river comes out of the Helenental valley in the west and crosses the town. From above you can see the walkable old centre, the green mass of the Kurpark rising up the slope and the vineyards on the hillsides to the north and south.
The town's sulphur springs made it a spa since Roman times, and in the nineteenth century it became a summer retreat for the Viennese court. Beethoven stayed in Baden many times and worked on his Ninth Symphony there. In 2021 Baden became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site The Great Spa Towns of Europe, alongside towns such as Karlovy Vary and Bath.
