Banderilla lies a short distance north of Xalapa, where the land starts to rise from the coastal side of Veracruz toward the high plateau. The map shows a town shaped by its terrain. Streets follow the contours, bend around ravines and sometimes stop at a steep slope, and the main road through town climbs toward Perote and the highlands.
The area is known for a cool, humid climate, frequent mist and dense greenery, and this shows even in a plain line drawing. Built-up blocks sit between patches of farmland and woodland, and the edges of the town merge with the northern neighbourhoods of the Xalapa area. From above there is no sharp line between Banderilla and its neighbour.
