Barreirinhas lies on the banks of the Preguiças River in Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil. It is best known as the main base for visiting Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The park is a vast field of white sand dunes where rainwater collects in seasonal lagoons between the crests.
On a map the town hugs the river. Streets spread back from the water in a loose grid, and the Preguiças itself loops and doubles back as it heads toward the Atlantic. Beyond the built area the roads fade into sandy tracks and vegetation, with the dune field starting nearby.
