Batavia Map Poster & Print
Batavia is a small city in western New York, between Buffalo and Rochester, and the seat of Genesee County. It began as the headquarters of the Holland Land Company, whose agent Joseph Ellicott surveyed much of western New York from here. The Holland Land Office still stands and now houses a museum. That origin shows on the map in the straight, deliberate line of Main Street.
Tonawanda Creek winds through the city, making a soft, looping line against the more regular streets. Residential blocks spread out to either side of the centre, and at the edges the grid gives way to open farmland. The city is also home to Batavia Downs, a harness racing track whose oval is easy to spot on a street map.
