Beidao Map Poster
Beidao is the eastern urban district of Tianshui, in the southeast of Gansu, and its shape is set by the Wei River. The river runs through a relatively narrow valley between loess hills, and the city stretches along it in a long band. On a map, streets and blocks are pressed between water and slope, so the built area looks elongated and directional.
Main roads and the railway run parallel to the river, while shorter streets climb toward the hills on either side. The loess terrain beyond the valley is folded and gullied, a pattern that shows on the map as irregular edges where the city stops. Bridges link the two banks at intervals and give the composition its cross strokes.
A Beidao map poster reflects a city that has grown along a river corridor rather than outward from a single centre. The district, now part of Tianshui's Maiji District, is close to the Maijishan Grottoes, a set of Buddhist cave temples carved into a steep hill, one of the notable historic sites of the region.
