Bergerac sits on the Dordogne river in the southwest of France, where the valley widens into gentle country covered in vineyards. On the map, the river is the main feature: a broad curve running east to west, crossed by bridges, with the dense old town on the north bank and newer districts spreading out on both sides.
The town is the centre of the Bergerac wine region, and sweet Monbazillac comes from the slopes just to the south. Its name is widely known through Cyrano de Bergerac, the hero of Edmond Rostand's play, and statues of the character stand in the old town. Bergerac also has a museum dedicated to the history of tobacco, once an important crop in the valley.
