Borehamwood lies just beyond London's northern edge, and its map shows a town of mostly twentieth-century streets. Shenley Road forms the main spine, with shops and the studios near it, and estates of curved roads and closes spread on either side. The railway to London cuts along the eastern side, and fields and green belt surround the town.
Borehamwood is best known for film and television. Elstree Studios and the BBC studios here have been used for many famous productions, which is why the town is sometimes called the British Hollywood. Many residents also commute into London by rail, which gives the station a central role in daily life.
