Buguruslan sits in the northwest of Orenburg Oblast, on the Bolshoy Kinel river, and the map is organised around its water. The town's regular grid of streets fills the higher ground, while the river loops through a wide valley, leaving oxbow lakes and meanders along the floodplain. Railway lines cut across in long, gentle arcs, and open steppe farmland surrounds everything.
Founded in the eighteenth century, Buguruslan became one of the early centres of the Volga-Ural oil industry in the 1930s, and oil remains part of its identity. The town is also known for its civil aviation flight school, which has trained pilots for decades. Its streets still reflect the orderly planning typical of Russian provincial towns of that era.
