Caratinga lies in the eastern part of Minas Gerais, in rolling, heavily folded country between the Rio Doce basin and the forested ranges toward Espírito Santo. There is very little flat land here, and the town has had to fit itself into the valleys it was given.
From above, that makes for an organic drawing. The central streets follow the valley floor and the course of the Caratinga River, while newer neighbourhoods climb the slopes on winding roads that switch back and branch into cul-de-sacs. Hilltops stay largely empty, so the built area looks like a network of fingers reaching into the hills.
Caratinga is the birthplace of Ziraldo, the cartoonist and author of O Menino Maluquinho, and the municipality includes a private forest reserve known for its population of northern muriqui monkeys.
