Castelo lies in the hilly south of Espírito Santo, and its streets are shaped by a valley. The centre sits on the lower ground along the river, and from there roads climb and curve up the surrounding slopes. On a map this makes an irregular, organic pattern with no single grid.
The river runs through the town and is the main organising line of the poster. Bridges link the two banks, and the densest blocks gather close to the water before the streets spread out into the hillsides and farms around the valley.
The mountains near Castelo include the Forno Grande area, a protected landscape of granite peaks and forest that draws walkers to this part of the state. A Castelo map poster shows the town at the bottom of that landscape, with its valley streets and the roads that wind into the hills.
