Châlons-en-Champagne, prefecture of the Marne department, lies on the Marne River in the chalk plain of Champagne. Its map holds more water than most French market towns. Besides the river, the Nau and Mau streams and the Marne lateral canal run through and around the centre, so the old town has a network of small bridges and quays.
The historic centre forms a dense oval of streets around the cathedral of Saint-Étienne and the church of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux. Beside the waterways, the large public gardens known as the Jard open up a broad green space. The town was called Châlons-sur-Marne until 1998, when it took its present name. Notre-Dame-en-Vaux is listed by UNESCO as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. The plains nearby have long been linked with the battle of 451 in which the army of Attila was halted.
