Chuxiong sits in a basin in central Yunnan, surrounded by folded, forested hills. On a map the city stretches along the valley floor, following the Longchuan River, with a compact older centre and newer districts laid out on broad, regular avenues. Expressways and rail lines run through the basin on the route linking Kunming in the east with Dali in the west.
It is the seat of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and Yi culture is central to the city's identity, most visibly during the annual Torch Festival held in summer. The surrounding prefecture is also known for dinosaur fossils: Lufeng County, to the east, gave its name to Lufengosaurus, one of the early dinosaurs described in China.
