Columbia's main campus fills a set of blocks on Morningside Heights in upper Manhattan, and from above it is one of the clearest breaks in the island's street grid. Broadway runs along its western side and Amsterdam Avenue along the east. College Walk crosses the middle on the line of 116th Street, which no longer carries traffic.
Founded in 1754 as King's College, the university moved to this site in the 1890s. The campus plan by McKim, Mead & White arranged its buildings symmetrically around a central axis. Low Library, with its dome and broad steps, faces Butler Library across South Field. Riverside Park and the Hudson lie to the west, and the steep cliff of Morningside Park to the east.
A Columbia University map poster frames the campus within its neighbourhood: the Upper West Side grid to the south, the newer Manhattanville campus to the north, and the green strips of the two parks on either side. In black and white, the geometry of the McKim plan stands out sharply against the regular Manhattan blocks.

This former stretch of 116th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue is now a pedestrian walk. It separates the upper campus from South Field and Butler Library.
Morningside Park
East of campus, a narrow park drops down a rocky cliff toward Harlem. Its long outline and winding paths form a strong edge on the poster.
