Comrat lies in southern Moldova, in the valley of the Ialpug river, surrounded by the rolling, open land of the Budjak steppe. From above, the town follows the valley's line. The river and its low meadows run along one side, and a network of wide, mostly straight streets fills the gently rising ground next to it.
The town is the capital of Gagauzia, the autonomous region of the Gagauz, a Turkic-speaking Orthodox Christian people. It is also home to a regional university. The plan is spacious. Long parallel streets are lined with single-storey houses and gardens, and a more compact centre holds the administrative buildings.
