Concarneau sits on the south coast of Finistère in Brittany, where a sheltered harbour opens onto the Baie de la Forêt. Its map is unmistakable: the Ville Close, a small fortified town, occupies an island in the middle of the harbour, ringed by ramparts and joined to the mainland by a short bridge.
