Cruzeiro is one of the administrative regions of the Federal District. It sits close to the Plano Piloto, west of the city centre and near the western end of the Eixo Monumental. On a map it is a small, dense district, set between broad highways and the green belts that surround Brasília's planned core.
Its layout belongs to the capital's early decades. The older section, Cruzeiro Velho, has low housing blocks in regular rows. Cruzeiro Novo has larger apartment blocks set among lawns and trees, in the spirit of Brasília's superquadras. The name refers to the cross that marks the site of the first Mass held in the new capital. Wide avenues and interchanges separate the district from its neighbours, Sudoeste and the Setor Militar Urbano.
