Cuautitlán lies in the State of Mexico, north of the capital, on the plain where the metropolitan area gives way to farmland. Its map shows an older centre with a compact grid around the main church, surrounded by newer residential developments and industrial zones. The Cuautitlán River runs through the area, adding a winding line to the regular streets.
The town has pre-Hispanic roots and is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Juan Diego, whose account is central to the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe. In modern times, Cuautitlán is the northern terminus of the Tren Suburbano, the commuter railway that connects it with Buenavista station in Mexico City.
