Cypress sits on the flat coastal plain of north-western Orange County, bordering Los Angeles County. Its map is built on the region's mile grid of arterial boulevards, with each square filled by tract housing, schools and small parks. Concrete flood-control channels run across parts of the grid, among the few features that do not follow the compass.
The city began as a dairy community and was incorporated in 1956 under the name Dairy City, before adopting the name Cypress the following year. Today it is home to Cypress College and the Los Alamitos Race Course, whose large oval track is one of the most recognisable shapes on its map.
