This is country of low hills rather than high mountains, and from above the land looks crumpled into countless small ridges and hollows. Settlements here rarely follow a straight grid, and the roads around Damiao take their shape from the terrain they cross.
On a map of this landscape, the most expressive lines are often the smallest: farm tracks curling around hillsides, lanes that split and rejoin along valley bottoms, and the scattered outlines of ponds and small reservoirs that are common across the region.
